New Mexico loves it’s Green Chile Cheeseburger. Have you had one lately? Simply Amazing! A fresh bun topped with a juicy beef patty piled high with fresh roasted, peeled, and seeded green chile, layered with aged cheese melted to perfection.
This culinary favorite has gained in popularity since the mid- 1950’s and has become a staple item on many menus throughout the state. We are proud of the New Mexico chile crop. The simplicity of adding a heaping spoonful of home grown green chile to a hamburger defines farm fresh in New Mexico! Some like it hot and spicy. Others like a more medium heat so you can really taste the authentic green chile flavor. I like many New Mexicans can’t imagine eating a burger without green chile! Due to the increased popularity from inside and outside of the state, the New Mexico Tourism Department created a map of the state’s outstanding green chile cheeseburger restaurants, cafes, and eateries. It was compiled by New Mexico residents, visitors, various restaurateurs, reviewers, and critics, from around the state. It is wonderful culinary resource. Now, in my opinion, there are quite a few more we could add from the Las Cruces area. From local burger joints to upscale dining you will most likely find a green chile cheeseburger on nearly every menu in town. Day’s Burgers, Dick’s Café, Chilitos, Go Burger, Burger Time, along with La Posta, all offer a mouthwatering, tasty green chile cheeseburger. Each offers their own variation of the making it fun to find your favorite. The Double Eagle Restaurant in Old Mesilla offers two choices – the standard half-pounder and “the world’s largest green chile cheeseburger” weighing in at one-and-a-quarter pound! Try that one on for size!! The Dickerson Group gets creative at the The Game Sports Bar & Grill. They have several to choose from. I love the Green Chile Cheeseburger with custom smoked bacon.
Sittin’ out on the shaded patio, eating this burger with sweet potato fries and an ice cold beer is pure heaven.
Really, there are just too many places in Las Cruces that do this unique burger well. So if you’re a local, venture out and find a new Green Chile Cheeseburger joint. If you just passing through try any of these and even a few more! Recently my daughter had a friend visit in town from Austin, Texas. What was the first thing they did? Grabbed a Green Chile Cheeseburger for lunch!
