Dona Ana County Courthouse and Jail

[minti_image img="20386"]This historic courthouse, built in 1937 is no longer used for judicial affairs, but is it an eerie spot with reported supernatural activity that continues to attract visitors and paranormal investigators. The building has been featured on Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures and has a rich paranormal history. Local legend has it that in the 1950’s a waitress named Mary Waters was found near the Amador Hotel and brought to the jail, assumed to be drunk. Once in a cell, she screamed – and just moments later, was found dead with a “horrified look” on her face.

Although the coroner’s report cites a ruptured kidney for Mary’s cause of death (and was later modified to include alcohol poisoning), some say her spirit remains in the jail. Paranormal accounts have included mysterious slamming of the heavy cell doors, cold spots, feelings of being followed and more. You are able to tour the building and can conduct your own paranormal investigation as well.

Stop by and tell us what you think.

The Amador Hotel

[minti_image img="20377"]Just down the street from the Courthouse sits the historic Amador Hotel.

Built in 1866, the Amador Hotel is another popular Las Cruces ghost tour stop.

During tours, guests have reported seeing shadowy figures lurking in the hallways, flashlights turning on and off mysteriously and even visitors having their arms scratched.

Some say it’s the work of the ghost of a little girl named Annie, a playful spirit who has asked ghost investigators to bring her a purple toy, and who frequents the rooms on the second floor.

The Amador Hotel is currently under construction and is not open to the public.

Double Eagle Restaurant

[minti_image img="20375"]The “supernatural” love story of Armando and Inez has been reconstructed from old locals’ stories, newspaper accounts and private letters and diaries.

As the “ghost story” goes, the first owners of the house, the Maes family, ran a freight line importing and exporting goods. Much of the business was put on the shoulders of the eldest son, a teen named Armando.

Armando fell in love with one of the teenage servants of the house, a beautiful girl named Inez.

The other servants – and even the townspeople – tried to help the couple keep their love a secret from Armando’s mother, but she eventually caught on and banished Inez from the house.

One day, upon returning home early from a trip away, the mother discovered Armando and Inez back together and in a fit of rage, attacked Inez with her sewing shears.

During the struggle, she killed Inez and accidentally stabbed her son Armando as well, who never regained consciousness and died a few days later. It is said that the mother, stricken by the loss of her son, never spoke a word again.

The legendary murder is said to have taken place in what’s now the Carlotta Salon of the Double Eagle and the lovers are said to inhabit it even today.

Reports from employees and past guests have included lights turning on and off, employees hearing their names whispered by “no one,” tables being moved from one spot to another, and complaints of feeling a cold breeze through a fake window.

Two overstuffed chairs sit in the corner of the Salon today, and though rarely used, show signs of wear.

Stop by and you may just have a sighting of the young lovers.
