Less than an hour from Las Cruces, this sea of wave-like sand dunes is the perfect daytrip destination for residents in south-central New Mexico and west Texas.
Want more time? We don’t blame you!
Las Cruces offers a variety of hotel accommodations, and nearby parks (like Oliver Lee and Aguirre Springs) provide plenty of public and private camping options. For the adventurous spirit, try Primitive Backcountry Camping at White Sands for a night under the stars (permit required).

A day at White Sands is the perfect family bonding opportunity – including Fido!
Start out by getting the kiddos sworn in as official White Sands Junior Rangers, then borrow an Adventure Pack to teach your little ones about the area’s native animals as you explore.
Physical activities in the park are great for the whole family, too. Sledding down the white sand dunes brings a feel of winter to the desert – just make sure children are supervised. For dog friendly hiking, try one of the park’s five established trails (leashes required).
[minti_divider style="3"][vc_column][ultimate_heading main_heading="#2 - It has something for everyone!" main_heading_color="#dd3333" alignment="left" main_heading_font_family="font_family:Open Sans|font_call:Open+Sans|variant:600" main_heading_font_size="desktop:30px;" main_heading_style="font-weight:600;" margin_design_tab_text=""][/ultimate_heading][minti_spacer height="25"][minti_image img="17213"][minti_spacer height="25"]
White Sands National Monument has fun for any lifestyle!
For the active and adventurous, try sand sledding, hiking, biking or backcountry camping – or even take your bike (motorized or pedaled) for a scenic ride on Dunes Drive. For the photographer, break out your camera and take advantage of the scenery, wildlife and more – just make sure to bring a cloth to keep sand off your lens.
Step Through Time programs celebrate inhabitants of the past, perfect for any history buff. And if you’re just looking for a little relaxation, pack your picnic basket and kick back under a shaded table.
The environmentalist can enjoy a Native Plant Garden Tour before hiking to learn more about the area’s natural vegetation. You’ll also appreciate White Sands’ commitment to its natural ecosystem: Its Leave No Trace policy is designed to minimize human impact on the environment.
And that’s not all! Take a peek at the park’s website for other activities White Sands has to offer.
