One of the best places to start your hiking adventure is the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. This protected area covers over 496,000 acres of land and offers a variety of hiking trails for every skill range from beginner to expert. Some of the most popular trails include the Dripping Springs Trail, which takes you to a historic site and a beautiful seasonal waterfall, and Soledad Canyon Trail. Another great hiking destination is the La Cueva Trail, which is an easy .5 mile trail leading to La Cueva rock shelter, an archaeological site located at the foot of the Organ Mountains. Dripping Springs and La Cueva are located within the Dripping Springs Natural Area and require a one-time $5 entrance fee for the day.
